Paul VI Men's Soccer Announces 2010 Schedule

The Paul VI Men's Soccer schedule has been released for the 2010 season.  In addition to the always highly competitive WCAC, the Panthers will play a tough non-conference schedule.

Opening the season, the Panthers travel to face national powerhouse McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD in the inaugural Adidas Panther Classic.  The Eagles spent most of 2009 ranked #1 in the nation by the NSCAA and are opening the 2010 season ranked #3 by ESPN Rise.  Two days later, the league season opens up in a big way with the first of three WCAC games with Good Counsel visiting Panther Stadium followed by games at Gonzaga and St. Mary's Ryken.

PVI will then head to the Maroon and Black Cup at Episcopal High School.  The two time defending State Champion EHS finished 2009 ranked  #3 in the nation by the NSCAA and are opening the season ranked #41 by ESPN Rise with a 45 game unbeaten streak.  The last time these teams met was in the 2008 VA State Semifinals with EHS winning in penalties after the game ended deadlocked at 1-1.

After the tournament, the Panthers return home to face Bishop Ireton in a WCAC game.  September 24 brings North Carolina powerhouse Charlotte Latin to Panther Stadium.  This game is the second match in the Adidas Panther Classic.  The Hawks, nationally ranked last season with a 20-2 record, will bring a real challenge to the Panthers.

The Panthers then move into the heart of their WCAC schedule with just one out of conference game on October 6 at St. Christopher in Richmond.  The regular season finishes on November 5 with a Senior Night matchup against powerful Dematha.  Conference and State playoffs begin the following week.

2010 is promising to be an exciting season for the Panthers!

PVI Captains Named for 2010 Season

Paul VI Head Coach Matt Leiva has announced that Matt Madigan and CJ Loving have been named Co-Captains for the fall season.

Senior defender Matt Madigan enters his second season leading the Panthers as Captain.  A three-year starter, Matt has been the backbone of the PVI squad that has reached the WCAC Semi-Finals the past 2 years.   As a Junior, he earned third team All WCAC honors as well as Honorable Mention All State recognition.

CJ Loving, a senior defender, returns to the Panther squad after being a key figure for the team last year.  In 2008, he helped the Panthers reach the State Final Four as well as the WCAC Semi-Finals.  2009 was his breakout season.  CJ played every game at right back for PVI, leading the team in minutes played and contributing 6 assists.

The 2010 squad opens their season in the Panther Classic on August 31 at McDonogh School in Maryland.

David Butzke Commits to University of Hartford

2009 PVI Men's Soccer Co-Captain David Butzke will be joining the University of Hartford Hawks in the Fall of 2010.  The defender from Centreville, VA leaves Paul VI after having a stellar senior season.  For his efforts, Butzke was awarded First Team All-WCAC and First Team All-State honors.  The defender led the Panthers to a strong season, helping them reach the WCAC Semi-Finals and the State Quarterfinals.  Head PVI Coach Matt Leiva stated "David's athleticism and passion were big reasons that our young team reached as far as we did last year.  We are so proud of his accomplishments on the field and excited to see him compete in the America East with Hartford this year.  He will be greatly missed and his replacement this season will have big shoes to fill.  I wish him all the luck moving forward in this new and exciting chapter in his life."
